Call for Application: Integral Ecology Internship (1) - Polyhedron Magazine Assistant

The current call recruits candidates for a ten month (1st Oct 23 – 31st July 2024) assistant position in Brussels, working under the supervision of the Laudato Sí Research Institute (LSRI) in the office of the Jesuit European Social Centre (JESC), whilst being a Fellow of the European Leadership Programme (ELP). These elements are a unit therefore, you are applying with one single documentation to both the assistant position and the Fellowship of the ELP.

ELP

ELP is a five month long residential formation where the Fellows receive leadership training and support in their vocation discernment during their time in Brussels. The Fellows live and work in the heart of Europe, receive introduction to Jesuit spirituality, help marginalised communities, and follow one-on-one spiritual coaching as well as professional mentoring sessions. An opportunity to meet current and former leaders from the EU ecosystem is provided, facilitating informal discussions and testimonies of their career and the ethical challenges they face. The ELP houses harbour 20 Fellows and are located close to square Montgomery in Brussels. The Fellows usually do a traineeship programme in one of the EU institutions or NGOs in Brussels in parallel with their ELP participation, as ELP is designed to offer programs in the afterwork hours and weekends.

Polyhedron Magazine Assistant

The intern will work under the supervision of the Assistant Director for Policy & Practice at the Laudato Si’ Research Institute, Campion Hall, Oxford to develop a bridge between research and practice in integral ecology.

Work that the intern is expected to carry out will include:

1) developing the LSRI online resources for policy-makers and practitioners, such a Briefing Notes, toolkits and others;

2) contributing to the development of the writing and multimedia content on the Polyhedron Magazine (which is an online platform for transdisciplinary dialogues on integral ecology to be launched in early December).

In addition, the Integral Ecology Intern may be asked to collaborate with the JESC Ecology work and the international Jesuit ecology networks, with the added supervision of one member of the JESC Ecology team and for a percentage of their weekly work time to be agreed between the LSRI Assistant Director for Policy & Practice and the JESC Ecology secretary.

Admission requirements

1. Academic background in areas such as sustainable development, (political) ecology, development economics, political science, environmental sciences, biology, international/ environmental law, international political economy, international relations.

2. Master level degree at the least.

3. English language proficiency level:

  • Applicants who have earned a university degree in the US, Australia, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, or New Zealand should present their diploma and transcripts as proof of English proficiency.
  • All other applicants should submit an English language test score: TOEFL (minimum score 94) or IELTS (minimum score 7 overall).

4. Applicants are required to present the following documents:

  • CV
  • Letter of interest (why Brussels, why LSRI, why ELP, what drives you) a) why the candidate is motivated to work in the area of integral ecology; b) how the internship will advance his/her/their professional development and career path
  • List of publications, if any (please attach it to the CV, in the same document)
  • Scanned copy of university diplomas
  • English language proficiency proof
  • Filled out ELP application form

5. Age (35 or less) - please note that shared residence and community life is part of the fellowship, and therefore no accommodation is available for family members.

Duration of the internship: 10 months, starting on October 1 2023 until 31 July 2024. This is a full-time position, amounting to 38 hours a week.

Financial contribution: The selected candidates will receive a monthly stipend of EUR 1900. The ELP&rental fee, c.650-750 €, will need to be covered from this stipend. (Mandatory to live in the ELP house and community.)
