The Laudato Si’ Research Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Alda Balthrop-Lewis as the Denis Edwards Visiting Fellow for next year. She will be in post and resident in Oxford between October 2022 and January 2023. She will succeed the upcoming Fellow for this year, Dr Emmanuel Nathan.

Alda is currently Research Fellow at the Institute for Religion and Critical Inquiry (IRCI) at Australian Catholic University in Melbourne. Her work has primarily focused on religious ethics and politics, through the lens of literature and ethnography. Her recent writing seeks to elucidate the application of religious ascetic ideals to contemporary issues.

The Denis Edwards Visiting Fellowship was established at the LSRI in memory of the late Monsignor Denis Edwards, who was a pioneer in the engagement of theology, science, and ecology, and a founding member of the International Society of Science and Religion. The Fellowship aims to support academic research in areas relevant to Edwards’ scholarship. It is awarded annually to university-affiliated scholars living in Australia, New Zealand, or Oceania.

Assistant Director for Research Programming at the LSRI, Dr Timothy Howles, says: “we are very excited to have Alda join the Institute next year. We believe Alda’s work and research interests resonate with the spirit of the Denis Edwards Visiting Fellowship, as well as the LSRI’s research mission in the University of Oxford and beyond. We look forward to her contributions during her stay with us, which will include a public lecture to be held in Oxford”.
