About: The Laudato Si' Research Institute and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Faith for Earth Initiative cordially invite you to attend this online book launch for An Introduction to Qur’anic Ecology and Resonances with Laudato Si’, by Farhana Mayer. 

The launch will consist of an introduction to the text by Farhana Mayer, followed by responses from scholars and practitioners, listed below. There will be an opportunity for Q&A at the end of the event.

  • Farhana Mayer

    Farhana Mayer is a Qur’anic Hermeneutics scholar. She was formerly a lecturer in Sufism at the School of Oriental and African Studies (2010–2012) and at the Institute of Ismaili Studies, where she lectured in Qur’anic Exegesis and headed the Graduate Programme in Islamic Studies and Humanities (2012–2015). Her publications include Spiritual Gems: The Mystical Qur'an Commentary Ascribed to Ja`far al-Sadiq (2011).

  • Revd Prof. Joshtrom Kureethadam

    Joshtrom Isaac Kureethadam is coordinator of Ecology and Creation at the Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development. He is also Professor of Philosophy of Science and director of the Institute of Social and Political Sciences at the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome. His most recent publications include The Ten Green Commandments of Laudato Si’ (2019), The Philosophical Roots of the Ecological Crisis (2017), and Creation in Crisis: Science, Ethics and Theology (2014).

  • Prof. Ibrahim Özdemi̇r

    Ibrahim Özdemir is a professor of philosophy at Uskudar University, Istanbul, Turkey. His focus is environmental philosophy and ethics. His books include Care for Creation: An Islamic PerspectiveRumî and Confucius on Meaning of LifeThe Ethical Dimension of Human Attitude Towards Nature; and the edited volume Globalization, Ethics, and Islam. His article “A Common Care for Creation: Said Nursi and Pope Francis on Environment” is relevant to this event. He was a member of the drafting team of the Islamic Declaration for Global Climate Change (2015) and a Strategy Document for the 2019 Islamic Conference of Environment Ministers. He is currently a core and draft team member for Al-Mizan: A Covenant for the Earth, due to be presented to the UN. The document will give an Islamic outlook on the environment to strengthen local, regional, and international actions that combat climate change and other threats to the planet.

  • Dr. Iyad Abu Moghli

    Dr. Iyad Abu Moghli is the founder and director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Faith for Earth Initiative. He has more than 35 years of experience with international organizations, the private sector, and scientific institutions. Dr. Abu Moghli’s expertise focuses on strategic planning, sustainable development, natural resources management, knowledge and innovation, and interfaith collaboration. Before joining UNEP, he served for 14 years in the United Nations Development Programme.
