Integral ecology is an approach that addresses ecological challenges from a transdisciplinary perspective, leaving no branch of sciences and sources of knowledge and wisdom behind. It encourages engagement with non-mainstream knowledge-holders, in particular indigenous peoples. Such an approach, which integrates social, ecological, moral and cultural dimensions, will be vital if we are to address the global planetary crisis in a just and holistic way. 

This event provides an opportunity to consider this integral ecology approach with reference to a recently-produced documentary film Guardians of the Rainforests (2024), which addresses the role of indigenous women and their spirituality in protecting the rainforest in Brazil, Borneo and the DRC. It will be of value to anyone interested in integral ecology, as well as in how scholars can engage in wider forms of dialogue and encounters – in this case, through the lens of filmmaking. 

The event will include a screening of the film, followed by discussion with the director, Lia Beltrami, and a panel of scholars with experience of working in different global regions. Lia is an internationally renowned Italian filmmaker, artist and activist and was awarded the golden lion for peace in Venice in 2017.
