Background

Jesuits in Britain (JiB) has more than £600m invested, with about 80% of that sum in shareholdings.  These funds provide a large part of the income needed for our works, subsidies and grants.

Responsible investment assesses both what is good for us to make money from and limits damage that those sources might cause.  This is a work to promote greater social justice worldwide.

The Investment Committee has developed a growing awareness of the concern for Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues.  To date, a member of the Committee who is also a trustee of the JiB has been the promoter of work in this area.

This work includes:

  • Reviewing and updating our ethical investment policy.
  • Checking on how our investment managers report on ESG, with a view to improvements.
  • Participating in networks that promote responsible investment, such as Charities Responsible Investment Network and the Church Investors Group and benefitting from the research done by these and many other groups.
  • Engaging with companies, in which we have shareholdings, to further certain objectives, such as questioning the level of fossil fuels financing by banks and promoting healthy foods at supermarkets or other such companies.
  • Monitoring how our investment managers vote our shares at AGMs.
