Introduction

This is the outcome of the symposium 'Women, Mining, and Toxic Contamination', held by the LSRI in March 2021, which examined the gendered implications of mining and toxic contamination through a theological lens. This symposium in turn fed into the LSRI launch conference on 'Women, Solidarity, and Ecology' in June 2022, which explored the disproportionate impact of ecological degradation on women, with a special focus on environmental and gender injustice such as that arising from mining and other forms of extractivism.

The edited volume, entitled ‘In Solidarity with the Earth: A Multi-Disciplinary Theological Engagement with Gender, Mining, and Toxic Contamination', edited by Hilda Koster and Celia Deane-Drummond, will be published by Bloomsbury Press in 2023, in its Theology, Ecology and Gender Series. It features contributions from social scientists, theologians and biologists.
